This wee chap, seen from a long distance away, is one of the rarest penguins on earth. It’s a Yellow-eyed Penguin. Estimates of the wild population are around 1000-1500 birds left, of which 800 or so nest on the South Island of New Zealand (the remainder are on Stewart Is and two sub-antarctic islands in NZ’d territory).

Oh, it's #Penguin awareness day?

I give you this loving couple of #YellowEyedPenguin . The iPhone photo was taken 2013 through 7x50 binoculars in #CurioBay, NZ. Yellow-eyed penguins are endemic to New Zealand and will soon-ish make the #extinction list.
From where I stand behind me, the black, 180 million years old petrified forest rests in the shallow waters. AFAIK, unlike the white variety, black petrified forest kept its carbon which makes it a #carbonsink .
180mio years ago, this location was near today's South pole, global Ø temperature might have been 2ºC warmer than pre-industrial and #CO2 concentration might have been ~900ppm.
