Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius)

There is, in fact, a bird on this tree trunk.

It's been a good day for woodpeckers in the yard! Downies, Red-Bellies, and Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers all came out to play.

The yellow-bellied sapsucker is happy that things are warming up a bit. I wonder if the sap they love so much has started to flow again?

The yellow-belled sapsucker is a persistent presence this winter and has the most fun name to say among woodpeckers.

Depending on the moment, the yellow-bellied sapsucker is either the most stately or the goofiest looking bird in our yard.

It’s warming up but the yellow-bellied sapsucker is still hard at work. And my favorite bird name to say!

It’s unusual to see yellow-bellied sapsuckers in our area at all, but the extreme (3.7 F/-15.72 C) has them exploring every nook and cranny for food for the second day in a row.

It’s always neat to see a yellow-bellied sapsucker. They’re never at our feeders, but enjoy the rotten bits of our backyard maple trees.

The yellow-bellied sapsucker is a rare sight in our yard but always welcome!

Upward Gaze

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is gazing upward—perhaps eyeing a better spot. I believe it’s a young male, marked by the faint beginnings of a red throat patch beneath the beak. And true to its name, the yellow belly is clearly visible.
