They see us as less than human. But we are the most human people in the world. Yahia, my brother, was born during the war in 2008. My mother was injured at that time because of a bomb. He didn’t speak for five years. For five years we struggled with him — to help him speak, to help him live a normal life — and he succeeded. He spoke for ten years of his life. Then he was killed. Yahia loved music, loved parkour, and was incredible at swimming. When he was killed, he was on the beach — his favourite place. When Yahia was killed, I was in Jakarta, Indonesia. I didn’t know. I didn’t know anything about what was happening. I went to the hospital and told the doctor, “I have a terrible pain in my heart. I’ve never felt this pain before.” He checked my heart and said there was nothing wrong. I went home. One hour later, I got the news. Yahia had been killed. In that moment, I understood why I had pain in my heart. It’s a soul connection. He’s not just my brother. He’s my son, my soul, my friend. He is the most incredible person in the world — curious, always asking questions, always moving, always full of life. His dream was to succeed in bodybuilding, parkour, music, swimming — like every child in the world. And this is what children in Gaza dream of. But we are not allowed to dream. Not allowed to think. They want us to only search for food, to suffer in tents. They want us without minds, without education, without success. They see us as animals. We see ourselves as everything. They see us as less than human. But we are the most human people in the world.
