"Those prized possessions are in the #archives of the #YIVO Institute for #Jewish #Research, celebrating its 100 anniversary. The documents, photographs and objects record modern Jewish #history and culture, from the #religious to the #comic, from the horror of the #Holocaust to the joys of Irving Berlin #sheetmusic.

YIVO was established in 1925 in #Vilna, then in #Poland, now #Lithuania, with the support of such luminaries as Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. Today headquartered in #NewYorkCity, it is an institution that represents the wholeness of the Jewish people, said its executive director, Jonathan Brent.

"There are #Zionistic works, there are #antiZionistic works," he said. "There are materials about #anarchism, there are materials about #Bolshevism, there are materials about #immigration, 'atheism, the entire gamut of Jewish life."

That is not by accident, Brent said. Its founding ethos was that every part of Jewish life was important."

I wrote this #Wikipedia article for Abe Katzman a while back, but I realized I've collected some photos of him at #YIVO and never added them to the article till now.

regrettable that we only have 4 tracks of his music, I tried asking his relative once if the family has old scores but he didn't know🕵️

Uploading some images from #YIVO to Wikimedia Commons this morning and came across this excellent booklet cover from the Freiheit Gezang Farein's 13th anniversary event in 1936. A communist-affiliated Yiddish choir from New York which is one of the predecessor's of today's (non-communist) Yiddish Philharmonic Chorus.

highly recommend this YIVO talk which took place today with Berlin-based music historian Jascha Nemtsov, one of the few people researching, performing and publishing about Jewish art music in the late Russian empire and interwar Germany, Austria and Mandatory Palestine. I learned a lot and want to read his book someday

I don't know how I spent 2.5 months doing musician research at YIVO and I never knew to call up RG 112 "Music collection" which is like a huge mix of old musical scores. Didn't even know it existed...

not necessarily relevant to my research project so not a huge loss in that sense but I definitely would have looked through and photographed some of the old klezmer scores from NY of the 1910s/20s...
