#Jews Are #Magic,” opening this month at #YIVO’s #Manhattan headquarters, explores the #Jewish fascination with #mysticism, #fortunetelling, #amulets, #psychics and #occult practices. While the exhibit reaches back to the #biblical and #Talmudic periods, its main focus is on the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. In the face of increasing urbanization, oppression in #Russia and the pull of #assimilation, Jews in Eastern #Europe and #NewYork’s Lower East, no less than their non-Jewish neighbors, found solace in the occult.

“In this time period, when people commonly think that sort of magic is getting left at the wayside and people are becoming more modern, they’re just as engaged with these unseen realities as they were beforehand,” said #SamuelGlauber, a specialist on the Jewish occult and adviser to the exhibit.

And it wasn’t just the huddled masses. Writers, intellectuals and scientists were fascinated by the #supernatural..."

This might backfire guys.

YIVO spotlights fortune-tellers, mind-readers and wonder rabbis, and the enduring appeal of the supernatural in moments of social anxiety.

I wrote this #Wikipedia article for Abe Katzman a while back, but I realized I've collected some photos of him at #YIVO and never added them to the article till now.

regrettable that we only have 4 tracks of his music, I tried asking his relative once if the family has old scores but he didn't know🕵️

Uploading some images from #YIVO to Wikimedia Commons this morning and came across this excellent booklet cover from the Freiheit Gezang Farein's 13th anniversary event in 1936. A communist-affiliated Yiddish choir from New York which is one of the predecessor's of today's (non-communist) Yiddish Philharmonic Chorus.

highly recommend this YIVO talk which took place today with Berlin-based music historian Jascha Nemtsov, one of the few people researching, performing and publishing about Jewish art music in the late Russian empire and interwar Germany, Austria and Mandatory Palestine. I learned a lot and want to read his book someday

I don't know how I spent 2.5 months doing musician research at YIVO and I never knew to call up RG 112 "Music collection" which is like a huge mix of old musical scores. Didn't even know it existed...

not necessarily relevant to my research project so not a huge loss in that sense but I definitely would have looked through and photographed some of the old klezmer scores from NY of the 1910s/20s...
