Working through another major work on the program for Uplifted: Gregorio Allegri's setting of Psalm 51 "Miserere mei, Deus"
Written in the 17th century in an already ancient style reserved for use in the Sistene Chapel, the work is a beautiful complex polyphonic antiphonal setting featuring a quartet of soloists.

Chronos in Rehearsal:
Rehearsing for Uplifted, the closing moments of Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei. Another piece on the program that was initially conceived as an instrumental work, Barber wrote this string quartet in 1936.
Performed often and strongly associated with elegiac mourning Barber added the text in 1967, bringing to the surface the work’s inherent sense of spirituality.

Zoltán Kodály's Missa brevis features some very special moments throughout the mass... here is a remarkable passage from the Agnus Dei.
Just when you think the sopranos can't go higher... they do!
Knowing that Kodály set these words "dona nobis pacem" - grant us peace - while in hiding in the basement of a convent in Nazi occupied Budapest, gives a deeper meaning to the music, the text, and is a testament to hope and the resilience of the human spirit.

Chronos Vocal Ensemble's "Uplifted" is just around the corner, including Eric Whitacre's "Alleluia" which shares several features with other works on the program: rich harmony, a memorable soprano solo, and an origin in music for instrumental ensemble.
Having assiduously avoided music that could have a liturgical function for most of his early career, Whitacre describes how the experience of singing services at Sydney Sussex College in Cambridge University in 2010 encouraged him to set a simple Alleluia to his earlier work for wind symphony, "October".

I learned yesterday that Dr. Bob de Frece passed away earlier this month.
A pillar of the #yeg community, he founded the Greenwood Singers, and lead the U of A Mixed Chorus and Handbell Ringers for... a long, long time. Back to the 1980s?
He touched many Faculty of Education and Department of Music students at the U of A and beyond for decades.
I remember clinics with him and meeting him in passing. He was an inspiration and mentor to many, and he's sorely missed. Bob was 77.

All Saints' Cathedral in Edmonton is our venue again for this season, and we are delighted to present concerts in this space that is so well-suited to music for voices.
This is a very big year for the choir! We have been invited to Podium 2026 in Victoria BC, next May. This will anchor a first West Coast tour for Chronos.
