Very proud of PhD student Cedric Maforimbo, who successfully defended his PhD thesis in viva today!

Cedric's research work is really interesting - he has piloted some new methods to identify #pollen loads on #bees & match with plants in the field margin. He has also carried out a tonne of fieldwork addressing some of our knowledge gaps around the role of field margins in support crop pollination in African legume systems, given us a load more information about what pollinates common bean (we REALLY need to understand the distribution of Xylocopa spp. and their habitat needs), and been a great colleague.

Pleasure to work with a brilliant supervisory team Phil Stevenson, Angela Mkindi, Steve Harte.

Wildbienen sind meistens klein und dunkel gefärbt. Diese ist zwar auch dunkel, aber riesig: Eine Blauschwarze Holzbiene labt sich an unserem Muskatellersalbei. Ihr Rücken ist mit hellgelbem Pollen eingestaubt.

For me it is difficult to distinguish between Xylocopa violacea and Xylocopa valga. But in this photo, this Xylocopa bee shows the back of the thorax so yellowish that it looks like another variety (Xylocopa pubescentes, Xylocopa virginica?) It would be very strange because the photo was taken in Valencia at the end of April.
Is there an entomologist in the room?

En esta foto, esta abeja Xylocopa muestra el dorso del tórax tan amarillento que parece otra variedad (¿Xylocopa pubescentes, Xylocopa virginica?) Sería muy raro porque la foto la he tomado en Valencia a finales de Abril.

Auf diesem Foto zeigt diese Xylocopa-Biene die Rückseite des Thorax so gelblich, dass sie wie eine andere Art aussieht (Xylocopa pubescentes, Xylocopa virginica?) Es wäre sehr seltsam, weil das Foto Ende April in Valencia aufgenommen wurde.

Quel plaisir j'ai eu aujourd'hui de voir la première #abeille 🐝 charpentière de l'année sur mes belles #hellebores 🌿 blanches et qui virent au vert avec un peu de rose lorsqu'elles sont pollinisées, surtout avec ce beau #soleil ☀️

L'abeille charpentière le #xylocopa de la famille des #hymenopteres est l'une des plus grosse abeille en France. Je la vois beaucoup sur mes sauges sclarées l'été et je peux la photographier régulièrement depuis des années grâce a cette plante.

Una femella d'abella fustera (Xylocopa violacea) "robant nèctar" introduint la seva probòscide per un forat a la base de la flor. Se li diu robar al no veure's beneficiades ambdues espècies, ja que en aquest cas és difícil que hi hagi pol·linització.

Carpenter vs. carpenter!

Today I spotted a carpenter bee (_Xylocopa_) with a disembodied carpenter ant (_Camponotus_) head still latched on to its leg! (Circled in second photo if you can't see it.)
