Art Pepper, Gettin’ Together, 1960 on Contemporary Records

Pepper joined here by Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Wynton Kelly (piano) and Conte Candoli (trumpet, on three tracks). That makes this another LP with Miles Davis' rhythm section, as the earlier Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section was. Rounding out for now my recent Art Pepper pickups (say Art Pepper Pickups five times fast), my copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2024 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at QRP.

It's Magic is the third album by American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln featuring tracks recorded in 1958 for the Riverside label

The editors of AllMusic awarded the album 4½ stars, and reviewer Scott Yanow stated: "Because Abbey Lincoln has always been careful to sing songs that have a deep meaning for her, all of her recordings through the years are memorable in their own way; there are no duds in her discography...

In an article for The Guardian, John Fordham noted that the album finds Lincoln "taking on the agenda and urgency of the civil rights movement and the edginess of a freer kind of jazz still to come," and commented: "'Ain't Nobody's Business'... and 'Little Niles'... are lyrically irresistible."

That's Him! is the second album by American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln featuring tracks recorded in 1957 for the Riverside label.

Eric Ajaye of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation wrote:

"While her debut was a flowery orchestral session featuring a big band with strings, this sophomore date pitted Abbey's expressive voice against some of New York's leading voices... Here, we get our first glimpse of a revitalised Abbey Lincoln, and both she and Roach would take this incandescent energy into the next decade with music made in response to the civil rights movement."

The authors of The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings wrote: "Dorham is one of the most naturally vocal of the bop trumpeters and as such is an ideal partner, though it's the still underrated Kelly who carries the day." - Wikipedia

Domino is an album by American jazz saxophonist Roland Kirk, released on Mercury Records in November 1962...

The AllMusic review by Lindsay Planer states: "The expanding musical universe of Rahsaan Roland Kirk continues its orbit on Domino. While always true to his exceptional talents, Kirk's previous efforts are somewhat derivative when compared to his later and more aggressive sound. On Domino, the genesis of his more assertive presence is thoroughly evident." - Wikipedia

West Montgomery - Full House

Meeting of some greats here - Montgomery (guitar), joined by the Wynton Kelly Trio (Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums)), along with Johnny Griffin (tenor).

Recorded live in 1962 at Tsubo in Berkeley, California—a hot set (supposedly the crowd had to endure some repeats to get a good take, but they've certainly retained their enthusiasm).

Gettin' Together! is an album recorded in 1960 by Paul Gonsalves. AllMusic's Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 1/2 stars. He wrote "The music is straight-ahead and shows that Gonsalves was quite capable of playing with younger "modernists"." The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings describes it as “a remarkable album, beautifully played and recorded.”

It was voted number 1 in the 50 All-Time Overlooked Jazz Albums from Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums - Wikipedia

Listen to one of the most beautifully constructed alto solos ever. Julian Adderley on "Freddie Freeloader," from "Kind of Blue" (1959). He's the fourth soloist, at about 9:46. Gorgeous.
