I start in Word Perfect, which has been my favorite for over thirty years. I like the layout and the ease of reading background code. When it's time for editorial, I move it to Word, because one thing WP does *not* do well is track changes and comments. Besides, Word is basically industry standard, so.
I tried scrivener. Used to love it. Then got frustrated and moved back to what works for me.
