New Read - Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Volume 4 (Omnibus 4, Japanese volumes 7 and 8)
This weekend I had a little bit of free time, so I ended up reading Volume 4 of the Kodansha releases of Wotakoi. This series somehow gets cuter the longer we go through it.
We've got three subplots going here. First, Hanako and Taro. We get a flashback with them where Taro got Hanako a gift that she cherishes to this day. We also get the two of them fighting, then truly making up and taking their relationship to the next level (and being very public about it), which is just the sweetest thing.
We have Naoya and Ko's slow burn relationship continue to grow as Ko realizes how much she really likes Naoya, but isn't sure Naoya would like her in that same way. So, she's just excited to be friends and Naoya is just about as oblivious as his brother. It's awkward and cute.
Then we have who is arguably our main couple, Narumi and Hirotaka, who just keep getting closer. Hirotaka even just gets sweeter and sweeter toward Narumi, and we see that Narumi is the only person who really gets Hirotaka's moods when he is just so hard to read for most folks. It shows a level of personal intimacy that's just so incredibly deep and sweet.
Gosh I loved it.
Also, here's a quick story. When I was in grad school I met the woman who has been my wife now for nearly 17 years. Apart from seeing a movie, one of our first one-on-one hang outs was us playing "Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine," i.e. Sonic the Hedgehog skinned Puyo Puyo. She destroyed me at it. It was so hot.
This scene where Narumi and Hirotaka bond over Puyo Puyo and play together, reminded me of that moment almost 18 years ago. Just, a random memory.
Onward to the next volume.
