The other marker of the turning of the seasons is the #wormfarm has been evicted from the conservatory.

We really neglect the poor blighters, but they seem to hang on in there. We have had this for a few years now, still with its original worms. (Well, their descendants I presume.) I have popped some veg waste, shredded card, and coffee grounds in the empty middle layer and shifted the bottom tray at the top and left it open to encourage the worms to migrate downwards.

I also collected the worm wee in a big screw top tub.

We should make better use of their wormy efforts really.

Next job was mopping the clearish 2/3 of the conservatory including the tragic job of soaking the dried corpses of escapee worms off the lino. 😢

I've been giving my composting worms old cotton clothes as the top layer of the worm bin, and they ate a t-shirt last year and a quarter of a pair of old jeans so far this year.

Ah adulting!

So I have a worm bin. A very basic in ground one where worms can come and go. I found some woodlice in it the other day and I thought no biggie, they’re chill. I opened it today and there were a bunch of flies. Maybe fruit flies but they hurried on out when I lifted the lid so didn’t get a good look.
Any #Wormstodon people know if that’s ok /harmonious or not good? (I trust ye more than google)

Got some boxes work were looking to get rid of, so I'm able to start my own #wormbin! I'll look for a shallower one for the bottom to collect the worm sweat.
So, I’ve started my in ground wormery 👍 Found a few good sites about what to add and what not to add. But when filling my kettle this morning - some loose limescale to dispose of. Can that go into a wormery if ground up/small shards? Chemically I thought it’d be similar to the lime already in soil so safe to add but hoping for advice here from the Compostodon crew 🐛 🗑️

If you have a #lawn to maintain, a few weeks before your last frost apply a layer of #compost to help fertilize it.
Then the grass clippings will be composted on top of it. Your grass will look more green than the neighbors.
You can also apply some aerated compost tea from a worm bin to bring the bacteria that will decompose the organic matter and create a more healthy #soil.

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

A lot of pepper #seeds have sprouted in a #worm bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The #worms love it.

Add #carbon to a #CompostAtHome bin

Wood chips, sawdust, #cardboard, #newspaper or paper, dried leaves, #straw or hay, pine needles, nutshell, and last but not least #compost.

The more it is chopped the fastest the #fungi in your bin will process it.

I have learned from the youtube channel Plant Obsessed that avocado seeds love to germinate in worm bins.
