Today's World Trauma Day. Not talk therapy; the kind that happens in 6 seconds. Every 6 seconds, someone dies from a physical injury. Road accidents, falls, violence, disasters. Over 5 million people annually. World Trauma Day started in 2011 in New Delhi after 400 people were dying daily in traffic accidents. The goal: raise awareness about emergency care & trauma systems that work. What haunts me: Road deaths are the leading cause of death for people aged 15-29. Young people who should be building lives, not ending them on pavement. 90% of road deaths happen in middle & low-income countries. India accounts for 11% of global road deaths. 53 crashes every hour. These deaths are preventable. What helps: Learn basic life support. Keep 1st aid kits accessible. Don't drive distracted, drunk, or exhausted. Wear helmets. Use seatbelts. Support better road infrastructure. Demand well-lit intersections. Push for separate lanes for different vehicle speeds. Trauma isn't inevitable. It's a policy failure

Today we remember victims of traumatic injury and recommit to prevention, timely care and community action. Traumaโ€”from road crashes, falls, burns, interpersonal violence and disastersโ€”kills and disables millions every year, but many of those losses are preventable. Small choices and system changes save lives: follow road rules, use helmets and seat belts, avoid distractions, keep vehicles and roads safe, and learn basic life support so you can act during the Golden Hour.

Share this message to raise awareness. If you drive, ride or walk today, make safety your priority.

- Wear helmets on twoโ€‘wheelers and seat belts in cars.
- Never drive tired, impaired or distracted (phone down, eyes up).
- Keep vehicle maintenance current: brakes, lights, tyres.
- Take breaks on long drives and plan trips to avoid night fatigue.
- Carry a basic firstโ€‘aid kit and learn CPR/BLS skills.
- Obey speed limits and traffic signs; use pedestrian crossings.
- Support safer infrastructure: sidewalks, lighting, separate lanes.
- Encourage phased renewal of old, unsafe vehicles and proper safety tech.
- For organisations: invest in road maintenance, clear signage, wellโ€‘lit junctions and separated lanes.
- Volunteer in or support local trauma-care and prevention programs.

Trauma affects mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and behavioral changes. Trauma-informed care (TIC) focuses on creating safe environments through safety, trust, peer support, collaboration, and empowerment.

Letโ€™s work together to raise awareness and support those affected by trauma!
