rowan {forest witch}Today is World Circus Day, so happy circus celebration all you clowns! I've been practicing aerial circus for just over ten years, and when we say it's never too late, we also mean circus. I never thought I'd take more than two or three classes, but here I am, photographed by my good friend Mercy, back in February, at a benefit show for a Latinx trans and nonbinary organization, put on at Club Fugazi in San Francisco. I'm out of the air for now as I recover from surgery, but I'll be back, and in the meantime I'll be taking ground choreo classes and doing my own circus photography.

Last year photographer Edwin Martin generously placed 138 of his photographs of traveling circuses in the care of the Library of Congress. An extraordinary record of a challenging way of life, the collection is a testament to the hard work and dedication of circus members who, for over 200 years, have brought joy to the American people. In honor of World Circus Day (April 19th), we are sharing excerpts from a recent interview with Martin about his experiences.
