Eurosurveillance | Volume 29, Issue 48

eurosurveillance.org is the online home of Eurosurveillance, Europe's journal on infectious disease surveillance, epidemiology, prevention and control.

RT by @ECDC_EU: Ahead of #WorldAIDSDay, we’ve launched the most recent HIV/AIDS surveillance report for Europe together with @ECDC_EU.

2.6 million people are currently diagnosed with #HIV in the WHO European Region.

It shows that underdiagnosis and late diagnosis remain the main challenges in our efforts to reduce HIV/AIDS.

Only 70% of all people living with HIV in Europe and Central Asia are aware of their status.

The biggest remaining hurdles in our region are restrictive and intolerant environments and even criminalization of HIV transmission – compounding stubborn stigma and discrimination – as well as inconsistent uptake of evidence-based interventions.

We must

🔹increase funding for HIV prevention
🔹create safe spaces for people to access services
🔹normalize testing
🔹ensure that policies are compassionate - not punitive.

Under- and late diagnosis of HIV is holding back progress to end AIDS in the European Region

Ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, a new report, “HIV/AIDS surveillance in Europe 2024”, has been released today by WHO/Europe and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The report shows that since the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s, over 2.6 million people have been diagnosed with HIV in the WHO European Region, including more than 650 000 in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA). Despite significant progress made since then, nearly 1 in 3 people living with HIV in the Region still do not know their HIV status.
