This article is about the same problem facing women in all careers. Employers & societal hierarchies worry how women will cope with a demanding career that requires high levels of dedication, once they have children &/or a man to prioritise. The idea that woman can have & do it all has died, because it didn’t, & couldn’t work.
It’s not just the fault of men who have failed to stop trying to “support” their working wife & simply been an equal partner carrying an equal share of responsibility.
It’s the fault of societies which insist on seeing a hard division between the responsibilities of caring for children & running households, & the world of work & “public life”. How anyone, male or female, cares for their children and themselves & their homes, is their business. (Unless they’re Indigenous, or LGBTIQA, or disabled, in which case some people &/or authorities might want to stick their paternalistic noses in, on the assumption that something is bound to be “wrong”.)
If we, as societies, want young people to have children because of fears about ageing populations, and simply because children & young people can be a source of enormous joy, we need to do 2 things. (Probably more, but let’s stick with 2 for now.)
We need to provide young people, of any & all genders, with sufficient supports to be parents while also earning a living. Innovative ideas about childcare, housing, job-sharing etc, that will encourage & support young families in ways that don’t penalise anyone who chooses to become a parent, or for that matter, those who don’t.
We also need to show young people that the rest of us care enough about them & their children, to try to make our world liveable now and for the future. We need to be throwing ourselves into addressing climate change, which includes the restoration of natural environments & habitats.
Rant over.
