Having read the Bentley books, often have I argued that programming is as much an art as a science. Managers who would rather believe that they need only hire code monkeys, refuse even the briefest concession that their programmers are not interchangeable cogs in the machine. Then, one day, the VP and his top guy stood at my humble desk and explained how the bills for long distance service stopped being generated and could I please take a look and fix it, because they were losing thousands per minute.

I did a hex dump, made a minor code change, and caused everything to start working again.

Today, I am reminded that at the intersection of art and science is something else entirely. . .🤣
