More woodchips. Maple edition with Virginia creeper that was inseparable.

Kinda annoying to feed into the chipper as it was all stuck together with those annoying vines, so you couldn't just pick up one branch at a time.

Now it's keeping the mud at bay where the cars park.

That concludes the woodchipping for now. Got some branch piles left in the forest, but upon inspection they were a lot smaller than I remembered :)

No mud in front of the barn this winter, thanks to the chipped spruce branches.

Spreading woodchips in all the mud areas works really well. Last year I was slipping around in the mud on that very spot.

Chip chip. That blue spruce does not make the best chips, with all its needles in there. But there's lots of it. Used it to sprinkle on some muddy areas outside the barn and by the firewood store where I need to get around in winter and it got very slippery last time. Should help!

Spread the woodchips from last night to make a parking area for the cars near the gate, so we can hopefully avoid last years mud party where both of them (and a DPD delivery truck) needed pulling out.

Also got a little ADHDistracted and laid out the planned carport. Always good to do so in the real landscape, because now I know I don't like where it is and probably will move it back a few meters.

This location maximizes solar yield (moving it in front of that maple), but wastes a huge area of garden space.

Useful exercise for that reason alone - now I can think more on it.

The #RedDragon got fed the huge pile of apple branches from the orchard and the resulting chips got raked out along the sauna paths, which were already getting muddy.

I call it #BioGravel - it's great, keeps you from sloshing around in mud, slipping on ice and nobody has to remove it later if its no longer needed.

Yes the grass will grow through it eventually, but that is absolutely fine :)

#GreenGosport Initiative puts ideals into action at #IslesOfShoals

by Deborah McDermott, June 30, 2019

Excerpt:
"The [wastewater] treatment plant is the last significant piece in the Green Gosport Initiative, named after the 17th century town that once existed on the island. For the better part of 10 years, Star Island Corporation has been working to become a #sustainable community.

"The initiative has included the installation of the solar array in 2015, which has reduced by more than 75% the amount of diesel fuel for the generators that once powered everything on the island. Electricity consumption has dropped by more than 35% by making a change to LED lights and purchasing energy-efficient appliances in the kitchen. All disposable packaging, utensils and straws are biodegradable, and there are bins everywhere that encourage guests to properly dispose of their waste.

"#Sludge from the treatment plant is dried and composted with waste #cardboard and #WoodChips, instead of being sent to a #landfill. The #composting program began in 2014, and last year for the first time, the first batch was ready for testing by the state. It was so clean 'we got approval this spring to use that product without restriction, anywhere. So this spring, we used it as mulch in the flower pots,' Simard said."

Star Island a model of environmental stewardship

ISLES OF SHOALS — Star Island Corporation Executive Director Joe Watts stands on a metal catwalk overlooking the island’s brand new and innovative wastewater treatment plant – the last big milestone …

Foster's Daily Democrat

Dear #permaculture & #nodig folk, how are y'all handling _the spreading_ of #woodchips during a #drought? Rather not and instead waiting for moister weather, or do you rather water them before spreading?

I'm wondering wether their insulating effect is a problem on soil that's dry to start with. The first few rains here seem to have barely moistened the top woodchip layer, but haven't reached the ground.

Seems like watering soil before spreading any cover seems best + then watering some more?

So what are people's thoughts on using wood chips for weed suppression? I've heard that fungal decomposition sucks nitrogen from the surrounding soil, plus the nooks and crannies can provide ideal habitat for plant-nibbling pillbugs. (This is not my plot.) #CommunityGarden #garden #gardening #weeds #mulch #fungi #woodchips #nitrogen #pillbugs #woodlice #allotment

Rest of the day was mostly feeding branches to #HerrSchröder. The woodchips completed a little garden path but the larger share went into the mud pit in front of the garden, which is a right mess now after the concrete removal.

Some ancient hay from the barn floor on top of that and blended it all in with the rotavator. The idea is that this will improve the gloopy soil there and allow it to drain better. Tomorrow I want to compact it.
