So here's the final print, slightly modified from the test print; the carving on some of the blocks has been tidied up, and there's now yellow added to the lantern and a dark gradation at the top making it look more finished.

And the first test print doesn't look too bad (though I really like the black keyblock on its own, TBH).

And that's the colour blocks now carved. One each for the background, the red kimono and glow in the lantern, and the yellow kimono collar and pattern and the lantern.

I've been teaching myself Japanese woodblock printing - "mokuhanga" - for a bit now, so it might be interesting to post something of my attempts.

My current print is the 'Fuchū' vignette taken from panel 6 of #Hiroshige's 'harimaz-e' series, Pictures of the Fifty-three Stations of the #Tokaido (with slightly modified border proportions to fit the block size).

Nice and simple 🤨

First step: make a digital copy, separating each colour onto its own layer.

We all love a comedy that gives a crash course in woodblock printing! And I have to say that the assassins of Vicious Moonlight are people of many talents.

Went to see the Hiroshige exhibition at the British Museum (https://www.britishmuseum.org/exhibitions/hiroshige-artist-open-road) and it is astonishing. Not just because Hiroshige is a wonderful designer, but the level of craftsmanship in the carving and printing is INSANE.

Spent 2 hours there just wandering from print to print, shaking my head in awe and saying "wow" (well, until I saw 'Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake', and that got a "Holy F*CK").

Shin-hanga: The ‘new print’ movement in Japan after 1900

After the decline of ukiyo-e in the late 19th century, a new art movement emerged in Japan that sought to revitalize the traditional woodblock printing. Known as Shin Hanga (新版画), meaning ‘new prints’, this movement combined the beauty of the traditional ukiyo-e style with elements of modernity and Western art influences. Emerging during a period of rapid modernization in Japan, Shin Hanga blended the beauty of the traditional ukiyo-e style with contemporary sensibilities, capturing the beauty and complexity of early 20th-century Japan, leading to a renaissance in the art of woodblock printing.

I'm experimenting with woodblock printing.
This is the first image I tried carving and printing. I did a few where I just carved random lines and shapes.
After printing a few on toilet paper wrapper, I printed a few in this card.
I saw a video of someone embroidering over a painting and thought that might work with this print. Decided to embroider a scratching post.
A few coloured pencil details and I think it's quite cute.
