EricI've had an idea for several years to combine the “wood weave” technique, with a grain wrap box, to see if I could make a weave that wrapped continuously around mitered corners, making a weave wrap box. I can’t be the first to do it, but I haven’t seen it anywhere, so the idea felt original, and kinda special, so I made it as a wedding gift for a childhood friend and his wife. (Well… more like a 1+ year anniversary gift, but I at least started before the wedding 🤣). I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, so now that they’ve received it, I can make a post about it.
Because I’m a sap, I made the weave with a lot of wood that has “heart” in the name - purpleheart, redheart, and yellowheart - to represent “love weaving throughout,” and since it was for a special occasion, I was able to get over the feeling of ebony being too special to use, and used it in a real way for the first time, which was kind of a personal milestone event in its own way.
I also got wood from the bride and groom’s childhood forests to make into splines. Real quick just in case, a spline is used on mitered corners to help strengthen the joint. So, I used the wood from their forests as splines to represent being on the same team, working together to make a stronger union, which is an idea I strongly associate with them as a couple. It’s the lighter wood accents above and below the weave on each corner.
I had a lot of fun with this one, and I'm kinda proud of it, so thanks to A&B for being the kind of people that inspired me to take it from idea to reality.
