A lot of the darkest areas are very sparsely populated, maybe a few farmhouses in a valley. Most don't have mains gas, and a lot are used to frequent interruptions to electric supply. One or two may not have mains electricity. Due to the low population density the air will be cleaner than on many of the light areas.

The temperature has dropped here in #Norfolk UK in the past couple of days…I fear this point in the calendar every year because it means people start to light their #woodburners and open fires (although it’s more often the former in the city).
This means I get deluged my my neighbour’s woodsmoke. I can smell it inside our house.
And every year I go around my neighbourhood with the #MumsForLungs flyers - particularly targeting the posher streets with piles of wood outside their doors.
