My partner, my father, and my brother don't know who these exceptional women were, but I will make sure that my son does.
I always thought hypothetically, "if I ever have a son I'll do this, I'll do that" (usually inspired by disappointing conversations or experiences with men in all areas of life) and now it's not a hypothetical anymore 😱 I actually have to do this.

"Art dealers ‘were known to scratch out a female artist’s signature and replace it with that of a male contemporary,’ since the market valued men’s art more highly."
"When Hessel asked 2,000 Britons to name three women artists in early 2022, only 30% could. More than half also said they’d never been taught about women artists at school."

Cat Hicks is a psychologist who knows her stuff re technology workers and workplaces. Read this thread and banish forever the thought that 'women are not good at maths' or technology. She cuts through the baseless arguments that people use to support these stereotypes and points out that it is the social environment that causes differences in abilities. If you are surrounded by adults that tell you that girls are not as good at maths as boys, where women avoid maths and laugh about how bad at it they are, where schools actively encourage boys in maths but not girls, then it is no surprise that the learning girl will conclude that maths is not for them.
And don't for a minute think that women are immune from these stereotypes about women! I have had female teachers explaining to me and their students that girls are bad at maths like we were living in the 1950s. It was the 21st century by the way. Women perpetuate these negative stereotypes as much as men.
The justice system is part of community health with more overlap than one might expect. So just as we've done with healthcare, how can we shift our approach in justice settings to be more preventative and proactive rather than reactive? It starts with support. Not only for the justice-involved, but for those providing support on the front-line as well.
Dr Hayley Passmore is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Western Australia Law School and a justice health researcher. Join us as we speak about Hayley's journey to justice health, reframing how we support youth and neurodisability in our communities, and how these human-centred approaches create better outcomes for everyone.
