Varvara Stepanova, ะšะฝะธะณะฐ ะธ ั€ะตะฒะพะปัŽั†ะธั (The Book and the Revolution), 1929 and 1930.

Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko (whose photography was used here), Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. She designed the covers and interiors of this journal of politics, culture, criticism, and bibliography.โ

Always a real pleasure: visiting Hansje van Halem, whose archive is housed at the UvA/Allard Pierson. And yes: riso printed letters fade easily.

Varvara Stepanova, flyer for "The Death of Tarelkin", 1922.

Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. Along with this flyer, she also designed the sets for the production. While itโ€™s not known if she designed the costumes for this production, the image is very similar to the geometric clothing she created for other plays.

Corita Kent, handle with care, 1967
& Chevrolet newspaper ad, 1966

Weโ€™re celebrating Corita Art Centerโ€™s new home by sharing some of our latest Corita arrivals. This piece borrowed an advertising catchphrase and gave it a new (religious) meaning by enlarging and distorting the headline for a screen print.

Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927โ€“2016), catalog cover for the Holt, Reinhart and Winston, Inc. publishing company, 1965.

Lustig Cohenโ€™s design career began quite unexpectedly. In 1955 her husband, Alvin Lustig, passed away. At 28 years old and with no formal training, she took on the clients and projects that her husband left behind. She soon established herself as one of the leading designers of the 1950s.
