#France's heat this week was worse than a dire scenario imagined for 2050

"A deadly and record-breaking #HeatWave that’s spreading eastward across Europe has revived interest in a hypothetical temperature forecast for August 2050 in France.

"The forecast was recorded in 2014 as part of a campaign coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (#WMO) that invited about 60 presenters worldwide to imagine a weather report from the year 2050. In one clip, Évelyne Dhéliat from French television network TF1 presented a hypothetical scenario of high temperatures 36 years into the future — during a heat wave in a warmer climate in 2050."

#ECMWF website returns #403forbidden when trying to access it from #China. Since few months ago. There is a good reason for it I am sure. But I could not fathom which one since China is a #WMO member.

Problem easily fixed with a VPN or by being back in Europe. I find it odd anyway.

"In the far north, climate change is not some distant warning anymore. It is already reshaping the landscape.

"Across Alaska and Canada, Arctic and boreal regions are warming up to four times faster than the global average.

"That puts a huge amount of pressure on #ecosystems that have long helped slow climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it in #trees, #shrubs, and #soil.

When forests stop helping

"The trouble is, those ecosystems do not always stay helpful under stress.

"As wildfires grow more intense, drought becomes more common, and other disturbances spread, parts of the north may start giving #carbon back to the atmosphere instead of locking it away.

"Once that happens, the whole climate system becomes harder to stabilize.

"That is why scientists care so much about #biomass, the total amount of living plant material across these landscapes."
