I guess the invasive "Himalaya" blackberry often has 3,5, or 7 leaves in each cluster, whereas the one that's native to California has 3 leaves per cluster.
So the saying we were taught about poison oak- "leaves of 3, let it be"- actually applies but for a different reason. With poison oak it means don't touch. With the native blackberry, the point is don't hurt it.
