Chris GlassTom got some shelves up to hold all of the ink and some extra screen printing supplies in the garage studio.
I think this was the second rev of this design where we removed the small print below that said “we get so few of them.”
Whenever we need screen printing supplies we’d go down to Camp Washington to this building with a bunch brown siding on the front that looked like it covered up retail windows long ago.
Inside was the most helpful man ever — always willing to spend as much time as needed to diagnose our litany of screen printing challenges. I would fathom a large part of our success was thanks to his wisdom (and the ability to get supplies pronto!)
He’s there in soft focus as I snapped the lovely Sprayway can design, but he’s the real star of this photo.
One last detail before launching our online store was a 404 page. Since the design was very home made, we decided to run with the theme and this little sign.
We needed someone to go through the entire checkout process with a credit card to test out the online store. That person was my good friend Erik who became Wire & Twine customer #00000001. (We were very optimistic about leading zeroes at the time.)

Thirteen years after the photos were taken.Back in the year of 2010, British-Irish boyband One Direction is formed and selling stuff online was kind of complicated. You could have a janky PayPal button fairly easily, but to have a cart and credit card processing? It was an ordeal.
We had that all figured out at Wire & Twine and helped Kelley Deal start selling her lovely handmade felted scarves online. It was always a joy when she dropped off a new batch to add to the inventory. She’d hang around the studio and use Tom’s old typewriter to make custom cards for each one with their name.
Yup. Each scarf had a name, just like Cabbage Patch Kids.

I would later adopt shame spiral into my vernacular.
And on this day we did a photoshoot to feature Kelley on the website, resulting in the image above where she’s covered in scarves. I forget whose idea that was, but it is a among my favorite snaps of all time.
