undefined | Winthrop man charged with Social Security fraud, concealment by Darin Zullo
A Winthrop man, 51‑year‑old Kenneth Riel, was indicted on Friday on two federal charges – one count of receiving stolen government money or property and one count of Social Security fraud‑concealment – after prosecutors alleged he fraudulently obtained retirement benefits for more than four years. Riel appeared in federal court, was arrested, and then released later that afternoon.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, Riel received approximately $88,383 in Social Security retirement payments between February 2019 and November 2023. He is accused of hiding the death of a known beneficiary from the Social Security Administration so he could continue to collect the deceased person’s benefits, thereby stealing government funds.
If convicted, Riel faces up to ten years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $250,000 on the charge of receiving stolen government money, plus up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a similar fine for the fraud‑concealment count. The case underscores the seriousness with which federal authorities pursue Social Security fraud.
