Winter Field Day 2026 Reflections: Is Ham Radio Relevant For Emergency Communications And Prepping?

My first Winter Field Day was a lot of fun! Despite getting food poisoning the night before, Saturday's 15 degree weather seems to have taken my mind off of it long enough for three hours of really cold outdoor radio. Sunday's snowstorm did mean I couldn't get outside today, so I had to make it count!
This was (probably?) my university's radio club's first time on air in a while too, so I was jazzed to be a part of it!
I mostly searched and pounced, but I did find a frequency to call CQ on and get a small but respectable pileup. I was apparently too close to the maritime mobile service net (despite being 3 kHz away, I'll have to check my mic gain), though so I ended up going back to some good ol' S&P. I did copy the bulletin! Fortunately, I had set up near one of the buildings on campus so I could go warm up inside periodically :)
Ended up with a hard won, and very cold 33 contacts. Hoping the club will be able to outshine that next year!
Fun fact: I'm one of 43 stations (as of now, count expected to rise) that openly admit to achieving no contact during #WinterFieldDay 2026, according to https://winterfieldday.org/results.php
Fellow honest ones, I appreciate you 😍 !
Learned later: It ain't neccessarily so. See the organizers' answer to this toot.
I took part in #WinterFieldDay, as a lowly 1H DX station. Spent quite a few hours in front of the rig, both Sa and So. I almost exclusively did #JS8.
I once came very close, just the final confirmation from the other station was missing to complete the QSO. I heard other WFD stations 3 or 4 times. But my end result: Not one single QSO.
Never had that in a contest before when I seriously tried to take part.
Oh, well... If all worked out nicely first time, successes wouldn't be so exhilarating.
Well, Winter Field Day is over and I had a ton of fun.
It was the perfect wrap for a week of vacation, during which I also tested for and passed my exam for my upgrade to Amateur Extra.
I even got to pick up a few QSOs for WFD down in the formerly "forbidden" sections of the bands by appending "stroke alpha echo" to the old callsign. Good times!
Thanks @WFDA for reminding us what 100w and a wire can do :)
