#Wine. . . .

Everyone takes note of #WineReviews & ratings, including the #SFChronicle's annual wine awards which were just announced for 2025.

I like to think that I'm buying & drinking the "best" wines at the most affordable price but, after I dug into it, I've always been suspicious of the SF Chron's wine ratings because they have SO MANY different wine categories & rate each category based on price, which means it's impossible to compare the quality of a $10 wine to a $100 wine in any category. So, you have to know which price range you're in & choose the best of the wines in that range but that begs the question of: Which is actually the "best" wine regardless of price. 🤷‍♂️

Of course, that's an entirely subjective question. So, I just go with my gut & drink the wines that I can afford that that I "like" best.

Ratings & reviews be damned. 😎

2020 San Gregorio Calatayud Las 75 Vendimias de Emilio González Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain Calatayud Denominación de Origen $16.14 / 88 14.5% ABV Decanted for one hour. Served at 65° F / 18.3° C The grapes were harvested from San Gregorio’s 900 hectares of vines in the foothills of the Iberian Mountains. The vines are tended by a cooperative of 250 joint owners. This particular wine comes from a single vineyard in the Lagüen Parcela, and the vines there are between 70 and 110 years old. The same guy has been in charge of this parcel since 1949. Can you imagine?? The info on the bottle suggests that this blend is 70/30 Garnacha and Tempranillo, though the San Gregorio website gives exactly the opposite percentages. I’m going to trust the bottle on this one. The wine is opaque and dark purple in the glass, and pretty leggy. Initial nose of blackberries, with the addition of strawberries and vanilla after the decant. Dry. Healthy amounts of blackberries, gravel, graphite, acidity and grippy tannins. Bold, medium body. An interesting comparison with last week’s wine from the same region (Catalunya), which had nearly the opposite amounts of Tempranillo and Garnacha. Wife says this wine is more acidic and tannic, last week’s (Puerta de Plata Reserva) was more fruity and I think, more complex. The price of today’s wine was twice that of last week. Had with a Mediterranean tapas platter (dolmas, feta, eggplant, salami, provolone, crackers, garbanzo beans, pita bread). The wine was fine with the salami, provolone, dolmas and pita. Stay away from things which are acidic or salty. #wine #wineReview #spain #garnacha #Catalunya

2021 Francis Ford Coppola Merlot Diamond Collection Blue Label
Geyserville, California

13.5%

$13.99 / 86

Served in Riedel Extreme Cabernet glasses. Served at 62°.

Nose of blueberries both in the decanter and later in the glass after a 40 minute decant. Also black cherry, dried herbs, dirt. Deep ruby. Well-defined legs. Palate of black cherry, blackberry, baking spice, leather, vanilla. Off dry, medium bodied, smooth. Soft tannins and medium acidity.

Had with Kale pie, with onion, garlic, eggs, lemon zest, feta cheese. The acidity in the wine ticks up a notch, which you may like though I’d prefer that it go in the opposite direction.

This is an inexpensive and decent Northern California Merlot. I’d like to try it with different food, and as I haven’t had Merlot in ages, I’d like to compare it to other local offerings.
