Well, after a day of fighting uphill both ways in the snow, we have 98SE working, with real graphics, and dialup networking!
No sound yet, and that's been a disaster, but it's something. Next: Sound, then games.

Bad news: this machine doesn't support booting off USB.
Bad news, supplemental: can't find my USB floppy drive. It's probably in a box somewhere.
Good news, surprising: found a NIB 56k serial modem in a different box, and CD-Rs can still (apparently) be bought locally, so... Winning?

Das originale Windows 98 (ohne SE) wurde in Deutschland bereits am 18.03.1999 veröffentlicht.

Yesterday's RoseNovember 6, 2001. Oulu, Finland. Agfa ePhoto CL18. Did futile manual attempts at trying to fix the fact that this was shot at 640x480, because unfortunately the AI rescaler plugin isn't compatible with Affinity yet (and also I haven't been able to afford to continue the subscription so I guess I'm screwed as far as that goes).
I'm editing these photos right now at the same place and the same desk. Though the computer has been slightly upgraded obviously. The Logitech speakers are in the closet, I have those CD-ROM games somewhere in the drawers and I still use the Microsoft Intellimouse with Raspberry Pi, but aside of that, I guess everything else in the photo has been upgraded. Oh yeah, and I still have the CD-ROM case on the desk, though I use it for my USB hard drives.

Update: Windows 98 SE Service Pack 3.2 (2022)
Für das Windows 98 SE Service Pack 3 gibt es ein kleines Update auf Version 3.2.
Nach über einem Jahr erscheint damit (endlich) wieder eine neue Version. Es wurden einige Fehler behoben und Verbesserungen implementiert.
