THE NORMAN KEEP - The most distinctive feature of Cardiff Castle is its twelve-sided Norman Keep, the finest example in Wales. Known as a “shell” keep, its outer walls protected smaller buildings inside.
Built of stone in the early 12th century by Robert Consul, Earl of Gloucester, it replaced earlier wooden defences. The Keep later held Duke Robert of Normandy, son of William the Conqueror, as a prisoner until his death in 1134.
