Finished compiling a StoryGraph “reading challenge” for probably my favourite living writer, William T. Vollmann.

I'm just trying to get my head around the scope of his ouvre, filling in the gaps in my collection of his books, and getting up-to-date by reading everything before the publication in April 2026 of his next massive work, a four-volume novel about the history of the CIA. 😬

I was wondering why Vollmann was so quiet. It looks like he has a 3,000 page, four volume masterwork on American foreign policy set for publication next year.

Speaking of William T. Vollmann, the poor man lost his daughter a few years ago, got prostate cancer, and can't get his epic one million word novel on the CIA published. (Whether he was completely cut loose by Viking is unknown, though I have heard contrasting stories.) But if there's any writer who should be tackling the present moment and who is qualified to do so, it's Wild Bill. Let the man publish anything he wants. Come on.
