After hearing testimony from Ventura County Fire Department Chief Dustin Gardner, Dr. Betsy Connolly, and me, the county Board of Supervisors today voted unanimously to approve supervisor Gorell’s resolution calling for more flexibility on proposed Zone 0 fire regulations.
The new rules could take effect as soon as January, and could require removal of all vegetation and trees near structures in high-risk areas. The resolution urges the state to take a more flexible and localized approach to wildfire preparedness.

Just watched a trailer for _The Lost Bus_ starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera. I almost started crying. I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the movie because of PTSD. We survived that fire in Paradise in 2018 but lost our house and everything in it. And at the end of the trailer they show the bus literally driving through flames. That happened to us. It melted the antennae off our car. It was terrifying.

Wildfire prevention and preparedness is always top of mind, never more so than now.
Here’s an overview of ongoing efforts by COSCA, the joint powers agency between the city and CRPD, to protect open space and educate residents on risk reduction. We’re also working with other agencies, from the federal to the county level, on additional preparedness and resiliency measures.

Great news for the Santa Monica Mountains, and for wildfire preparedness in our area: The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy will receive $31.3 million from Prop. 4 funds for watershed improvement, wildfire resilience, chaparral and forest restoration, and workforce development. Job training will target disadvantaged and vulnerable communities.
The first batch of these funds will be on the SMMC’s Monday night agenda as a grant to @venturacountyfire (h/t former state Sen. Fran Pavley)
