Not my photo (it's of a #wildfire in #California), but this is exactly what the Sun here in Southern Maine / York County looked like today! So apocalyptic!

#ClimateDiary for Southern #Maine on 8/16/2024. The #AirQuality was so bad, I had the windows up most of the drive into Portland and back, and my partner (who is NEVER bothered by #WildfireSmoke or AQ issues) had to do just a short afternoon walk with the dog -- and gave up on doing some yardwork.

#ClimateDiary for 8/14/2024 in #Maine. Temperatures are in the #HabitableZone, but #WildfireHaze made the "clear" sky hazy white. #AirQuality not the best, especially in #NorthernMaine.

In other news, #Wildfire season is upon us...

Canada wildfire smoke is creating ‘unhealthy’ air quality in the northern US

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is back and is spreading over part of the northern #UnitedStates, and it could spread farther throughout the week.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published May 13, 2024

"In a replay of last year around the same time, wildfires in Canada have become more numerous over the past week. Smoke from those fires is being carried into the northern United States and will result in hazy skies and, in some cases, poor air quality, AccuWeather meteorologists say.

"Last year, large wildfires burned much of central and southern Canada and periodically sent smoke into the northern U.S. The Canadian wildfire season is expected to be near to above the historical average in terms of the number of fires and well above average in terms of the acreage burned. However, the numbers will be much less than those of the record-shattering season of 2023."

Last thoughts about the #wildfires for a while. This is so much like #covid in that we're once again left to muddle our way individually through the crises. Don't know much about #AirQuality and #ventilation and #filtration? Better learn because there's no official authority to educate you!

We could collectively address the #ClimateChange crisis, just like we could collectively address the #Covid19 crisis, but instead we're left to fend for ourselves. And people will step up to help each other, and I'm grateful for that! But at the same time, it didn't have to be this way

I'm seeking #advice from #AirQuality experts (or at least someone who knows more than I do). I live in a studio apartment and I've kept my windows shut tight because of all the #wildfire smog in my area. However, my Aranet carbon dioxide monitor has recently indicated the air in my apartment has reached unhealthy levels.

Is there a way I can lower the CO2 in my apartment without opening windows? (Or getting houseplants, because I tend to kill them.) Or should I just not worry about what the CO2 monitor says for now?

I am running MERV 13 air filters, but they don't seem to filter out carbon.

Thank you in advance!

The email I want to send to my mother after I have repeatedly begged her to stay inside or at least wear a mask during bad #AirQuality days and she goes out today and decorates my grandfather's grave and sends me a bunch of pictures like nothing is wrong:

"Dear Mother, how nice of you to commemorate your father by going out and giving yourself lung cancer in the polluted air. Now you can die the same way he did! So thoughtful of you to carry on the family tradition! Exasperatedly yours, Rat"

It feels cliché at this point, but I'm so sick of trying to convince my mother to do basic things, like masking or running air filters, that will protect her from #covid and #ClimateChange. My relationship with her was always bad, but her refusal to take even basic precautions feels like it's going to completely break me at some point soon.

There's a sort of "going through the motions" this year at work that didn't even seem to exist last year—people do their work and talk about work and act like their jobs are the only thing in their life. Meanwhile, I want to scream, "Look outside! It's noon and you can't even see the sun because of the #WildfireHaze! I haven't left my apartment without a mask in 4 years because of #covid! #ClimateChange is clearly killing us and our civilization will collapse soon! How do any of you give a single shit about anything we are doing here?! At the very least don't you want to, like, I don't know, hug your kids and cherish some time with them? How is this bullshit so important to you?! Do you have no perspective?!"

Like, what is it going to take to shake people out of their numb stupors? And what is there for those of us who can't bring ourselves to care about work because the planet is dying and we are dying and nothing else should possibly matter?
