Post #WildCardWeekend penalty breakdown
As expected, the crews pivoted to a "let 'em play" approach last week
Penalty per game avg declined from 12.7 in reg season to 9.0 per game in playoffs
The OFFENSE accounted for a larger percentage of penalties assessed, at 60% , vs reg season avg 47.7%
The offensive increase resulted in a big decline in both DEFENSIVE & SPECIAL TEAMS penalties
As expected, OFFENSIVE HOLDING penalties declined. In raw per game numbers, OFF-HOLD penalties were cut in half from regular season avgs
Offsetting that decline was a spike in FALSE START infractions, which increased vs reg season & accounted for a disproportionate 29% of penalties assessed on Wild Card Weekend
DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE & DEFENSIVE HOLDING penalty avgs. both declined because of the "let em play" approach , providing defensive units more leeway to hold without being penalized
Another area of increase was UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS, averaging almost double the amount of reg season contests when measured via percentage & in raw per game numbers
This should continue as we move forward, based off historical numbers in standalone/primetime contests, where officiating crews are quicker to throw flags on those 50/50 hits than they are in a regular Sunday day game
