Patios will be free of moss and weeds with expert-approved item — no pressure washer
Asking customers to telephone is now a punishment, and increasingly used as a way to discourage us from pursuing our rights because telephoning organisations is so often a terrible experience.
Latest businesses I refuse to phone:
- #BarclaysBank, to claim their poultry £100 compensation
- #Wickes, to get a refund on an item they sent knowing it was broken
Business needs to compete for customers on service, not punish us to accept derisory offers. #ConsumerRights
I had been considering this. Again, it's surprisingly hard.
#Wickes, for instance, doesn't sell 8mm dowel rods. The only diameters available seem to be multiples of 3mm. (This might actually turn out to be the right choice. The dowels that I removed are 8mm, but the process of removal of the broken-off stubs, which involved a bit of drilling at an awkward angle, might have enlarged the holes.)
B&Q does sell 8mm rods, but in metre lengths, about 4 times as much as I actually need.
The hidden cost of this route is, though, that it would involve also buying a saw, as all of my saws, even my smallest-toothed hand saw, are impractical for accurately cutting something that small.
My best bet if I go down this route is borrowing a smaller hand saw off a relative, which unfortunately incurs the alternative hidden cost of spending several days tidying the relative's stuff to physically access it. (-:
I'll check in Wickes today, as I happen to be going there, but I know that B&Q does plain wooden circular cross-section rods of varying diameters and that can be cut down to 700mm.
At least it did the last time that I was looking for one, which was a couple of years ago. There was a special display at the back of the shop in the B&Qs in the Big City. There's now a B&Q in the nearby Town (it having taken over the erstwhile Homebase site).
These places do explicit plastic curtain rails as well, of course, but my experience is that pre-made shelving and railing is never *quite* the right size and doesn't cut to fit.
