Hamad Butt was a young gay Pakistani-British artist who died of AIDS in 1995.

The Whitechapel Gallery recently held a retrospective of his work.

He was interested in mixing art and science. He drew on western and eastern art, and referenced his gay and Muslim identities.

Towards the end he worked mainly in sculpture. These works incorporated potentially deadly chemicals.
