#WhatWereReading : Ivana loved The Brides, by Charlotte Cross, a fantastic prequel to Dracula, with a feminist twist & plenty of Gothic atmosphere. Out now from Tor Nightfire.

#WhatWereReading : Joe found Professor Anna Whitelock's The Sun Rising (pub Bloomsbury) to be a fascinating insight into the change from the Elizabethan to Stewart period, laying foundations for a more global Britain afterwards (for good & ill!).

Less a biography of James, more about the world changing around him, at home and abroad (in a seemingly ever expanding world as ships explore more and more of the globe), and how he and those around him react or change to those.

Now in PB

#WhatWereReading : Joe loved Rachel Louise Driscoll's debut, Nephthys, following a woman travelling through Egypt, who may, or may not have a real curse to lift (is it real, is her guilt speaking?). Now out in paperback from
Vintage Books

#WhatWereReading : Joe found John Scalzi's When the Moon Hits Your Eyes - where, in an almost Wallace & Gromit move, the Moon literally becomes cheese! - to be a total delight!

Out now in paperback from Tor / Macmillan , an ideal fun distraction from all the current woes.

#WhatWereReading : Joe decided to revisit The Odyssey, ahead of this year's Christopher Nolan film adaptation, thoroughly enjoying Emily WIlson's excellent translation & interpretation from W.W. Norton.

A good excuse to reacquaint ourselves with one of the pillars of world storytelling (and let's face it, storytelling is one of the things humans are astonishingly adept at).

Come sail the wine dark seas...

#WhatWereReading : Joe enjoyed the latest fiction in translation from Akoya, Spanish writer Marta Sanz's wonderfully titled My Clavicle & Other Massive Misalignments (translated by Katie King)

The author deals with middle age & bodily changes in a realistic, but often humorous manner many will recognise. Are these aches and pains serious? They're serious, right? Or are they in her head?

Some medical professionals are helpful, others dismissive, and we realise this is about the way our bodies change in middle age - the aches, the pains, the worry that they signifiy something more, even menopause itself, but tackled in a way that is sympathetic but often humorous.

#WhatWereReading : Fiona loved Salina Yoon's Penguin and Pinecone from Bloomsbury.

It's an older book, but just such a warm, charming story of love & friendship we wanted to share it.
