When I was 16 they made me buy a $120 calculator in order to finish school.
Here is an advice column from a human resources manager with a letter poster who captures the pandemic clarity available to more people, especially in the middle and upper classes. Plenty of poor + working class people had already come to the idea that work is not always a match for abilities+values.
