Happy Waitangi Day, Aotearoa!

In celebration, we're highlighting Whale Rider, the international hit movie about a Māori girl who challenges gender norms to pursue her destiny, based on the acclaimed novel by Witi Ihimaera.

When Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance at age 13, she became the youngest actress ever nominated for the award at that time and the first Indigenous actress and first Māori actress ever nominated.

We were honored to partner with the filmmakers to make the official teaching guide for this film. Get our free lesson plans to share this beautiful film with your learning community.

Seeing the news of that whale stranding today, it's hard to not think:

"Ok, time to fess up NZ: Who called the ancients here again?! I know we've had a whole host of challenges recently, but damn..."

(Yes... I did rewatch that film recently. 1st time since we went took a class trip to Hoyts Northlands to watch it when it came out! TBH, while we were generally disappointed by the adaptation, watching it again, it holds up quite well + is better than I remember!)

@RosyMaths For anti-bias education, a great film for your students' age range might be Whale Rider. It streams for free in many regions. It tells a compelling story of a girl around your students' age pursing her destiny despite other people's prejudice. And it's a good starting point for discussions about gender, culture, and identity.

We hope this helps! If you have more questions or requests, please let us know! 2/n

We were excited to spy Whale Rider on this Kanopy poster at #ALAAC24! We are big fans of the award-wining coming-of-age film about a Māori girl who challenges tradition to fulfill her destiny. Students love it!

I need to read the book Whale Rider by Māori writer Witi Ihimaera. It appears the film adaptation misrepresented and misunderstood Māori culture and was not true to the source material. This is usually the problem when white people try to portray other cultures through their own lenses. The film grossed $41.4 million worldwide. #WhaleRider #Māori #Maori #Indigenous #movies
