I'm inventing a new film genre that I'm going to call "Old West Noir."
Examples include -- but are not limited to -- Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven," 1992, and Alejandro Inarritu's 2015 saga, "The Revenant," starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
(Apologies to the actual inventor of this genre, if it's already been named and claimed.)
Now that you know what I'm talking about, if you like this sort of thing, there's a great new mini-series streaming now on the Netflix with Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch called, "American Primeval."
It takes place in 1857 in the US's Utah territory.
Gritty, grim, and action-packed, I had to pull myself away from it after the first episode or I would have binged the whole thing.

A ★★★★½ review of The Man from Laramie (1955)

Excellent Western noir, giving us both action and drama. James Stewart is a former Army captain who runs afoul of the psycho son (Alec Nicol) of the local "owns the town" rancher (Donald Crisp). Stewart is searching for the source of guns being sold to the Apaches who killed his brother. Jimmy falls for general store owner Cathy O'Donnell (who gives the weakest performance), who is also the niece of Crisp (and engaged to his foreman Arthur Kennedy). Jack Elam is the town drunk/snitch. Aline MacMahon is great as Crisp's rival (and former lover). If this gets remade, it'd be

A ★★★★ review of Day of the Outlaw (1959)

Excellent, occasionally brutal, noir western directed by Andre de Toth (PITFALL) and written by Philip Yordan (JOHNNY GUITAR). Blaise Starrett (Robert Ryan) is a rancher who helped tame the desolate town of Bitters, only to have it taken over by "pot bellied farmers". He hates farmers, especially those who use barbed wire. Starrett spots a wagon full of wire and plans to torch it. He also had previously had an affair with the wagon owner's wife (Tina Louise). Sooner or later, Starrett would probably wind up killing the guy. When it looks like it may happen, a gang of outlaws
