In graduate school, after Professor Horst Daemmrich told me to stop reading Der Zauberberg (1924), by Thomas Mann (1875-1955), and focus on Mann's Doktor Faustus (1947), I turned to the latter novel with the ideas about distance I haddrawn from Mann's novellas Tonio Kröger (1901) and Der Tod in Venedig

There's a diner near my house where they have photos on the wall of noteworthy people who have eaten there. (For example, not shown here, the staff with Hillary Clinton.)

This one always hijacks my brain. The gentleman in the tie, fourth from right, is Congressman Chaka Fattah. Presumably the photo was taken while he was still serving in Congress, before he was convicted of 23 counts of racketeering and fraud.

Standing in line to pay my bill I always wonder: if this were my diner, would I have taken down the picture, maybe around the time that Fattah went off to federal prison?
