Second bird tests positive for West Nile virus in Ventura County

For the second time this year, public health staff said a bird in Ventura County tested positive for West Nile virus. The Ventura County Environmental Health Division announced the discovery on Tuesday after receiving confirmation from the California Department of Public Health. County staff said they expect more positive cases to emerge throughout this year's mosquito season.  Public health officials said they located both birds in the City of Ventura. The first was found on May 12, and the […]

#WestNile virus spreads through a transmission cycle involving birds and mosquitoes, primarily in rural and agricultural areas.

It is being monitored in #Saskatchewan, #Manitoba, #NWT and #Ontario.

Yet in Ontario, surveillance is largely concentrated in cities and suburbs, leaving rural areas, where the virus actually circulates, underrepresented.

A dead crow found in the City of #Guelph tested positive for West Nile virus on June 2, 2026.”

North Carolina has had 9 cases of West Nile virus so far this year. 3 cases were in Durham. Mosquitoes carry it; Durham did targeted mosquito spraying within ~1 mile of Trinity Park. Ok, good.

I wonder how TP wound up w/ 3 diagnosed cases? My understanding is that ~1% or less of cases are diagnosed. I wonder if, maybe for economic reasons, folks in TP were simply more likely to be diagnosed? https://dconc.gov/DurhamCo-News/Public-Health/Final-Round-of-Targeted-ULV-Spraying-to-be-Conducted-October-15-16.htm #DurhamNC #WestNile #arbovirus #publicHealth
