Werner syndrome exonuclease promotes gut regeneration and causes age-associated gut hyperplasia in Drosophila
Mutations in the Werner syndrome (WRN) gene cause premature aging during early adulthood, but the role of this exonuclease in natural aging remains unclear. This study shows that the Drosophila homolog WRNexo regulates the unfolded protein response of the endoplasmic reticulum in intestinal stem cells, promoting gut regeneration during injury, but also triggers gut hyperplasia during aging.
