as radicals, self-examination is a vital tool. when we break a code we follow, we diminish not only our own moral fortitude, but the validity of our ideology in the eyes of others.
as an example, i am non-binary and my chosen name isn't a "normal" name, it is usually a verb and I'm using it as a noun. when my child decided he wanted to be called by his YouTube channel name, I struggled with it. he, like me, did not pick a name that is common as a name, it's an adjective. it wasn't that i didn't like it, it's actually really cool and i'm kinda jealous XD, it was just awkward to explain to people. what a dipshit, check out that internalized transphobia. sorry that you caught the strays kid.
when i recognized the hypocrisy in my actions it made me sick. how the hell am i going to ask this kid to call me by something other than my given name, and not do the same for him? i even noticed little jabs he'd give me at my transness when i was still getting his name wrong, and they seem to have completely gone away since i quit my bullshit. hmm...interesting.
