@dalias Say you want the public to benefit from a video codec that's usable by free software in countries where MPEG-LA members hold patents. Would there have been a better way to go about this than how Google released WebM using On2's TrueMotion VP8?

Someone NEEDS to tech-splain to me, WHY exactly it is preferable to

👉 #transcode a 198.8 KiB #GIF #animation into a larger not-GIF format
👉 upload a 230KiB #webm #video, and not suffer improper frame-pacing
👉 misrepresent lots of formats, that aren't GIF(Graphics Interchange Format)

As a #Twitter #Refugee, i find the severe LACK of #Truth in the #Mastodon #Code really rather disturbing! 🤬

When's #Mastodon gonna roll out support for #WebP animations? It should also start handling video formats like #WebM or #MKV, a social for nerds and geeks oughta be one of the first to jump on that, especially since they're open formats with no royalties. #opensource #socialmedia

@nytpu That's because #JPEGXL is designed to be a high-res image format and #WebP is just the #WebM intraframe #compression applied as a still-frame.

OFC it's gonna look like a #GIF compared to a #TIFF...

Well, I did it. I deleted my #Loops account, I am off that #Fediverse platform. There is no #WebBroswer option to use it. Uploading #Webm and #MKV videos is a no-go, and it failed to optimize the #mp4 from my phone.

I just made a #WebM video for #loops it is 1.8mb down from the 8.6 mb when it was a #MKV. It has been several minutes at 0% of optimizing the video. Hahaha what!? Wait... It was taking to long so I tried the mkv file and that is stuck. Does loops only do #Mp4 files? That is too bad and kinda dumb. Looks like I will be dropping loops from my #fediverse profile
