EDIT: Okay, solved it! 🥳 It turns out that the solution was:

Tools > Preferences > Input > Hardware acceleration to "off", then restart VLC

The graphics card was somehow messing up VLC's playback it seems, so switching it off in VLC made it work.

I have VLC on a Linux Mint PC and it won't play WEBM video files properly, there's sound but a blank screen.

The same files on the same PC play totally fine in Celluloid, but not in VLC. Any ideas why VLC is having problems?

#TIL from building a web audio player (for the mixes):

#Safari's #opus support is still quirky. With a #webm container, playback works but AnalyserNodes won't receive anything to compute frequency data with. With #ogg, `getByteFrequencyData()` works, but the audio element calculates the wrong duration, prob. b/c it always assumes CBR. Also if you build the audio pipeline before the first user interaction in Safari, nothing will get routed to the speakers

But still, the #WebAudioAPI is awesome!

Now that #Dolby has launched a #patent lawsuit over #AV1, unless I'm mistaken we're about to have a repeat of the #Unisys #GIF patent situation where all #browser⁠s must remove support for widely-used image and video formats, namely AV1, #AVIF, #WebP, #WebM, #VP8, and #VP9.

This is really bad. The only other widely supported video codec is #MPEG-4 (which is also patented) and the only other widely supported lossy image format is #JPEG (which is rather inefficient).

What do we do?

.. .. I know what you're thinking: "that's super easy, just run ffmpeg -i input.webm output.mp4"

And yeah, it's that easy, in roughly 50% of cases. Specifically when your video's height *happens to be* divisible by 2. But if your height *happens to be* an odd number, hooo boy, ffmpeg does not get happy.

Can't it just automatically chop off the last row of pixels???

👉 upload a 230KiB #webm #video, and not suffer improper frame-pacing
👉 misrepresent lots of formats, that aren't GIF(Graphics Interchange Format)
