Harehope Quarry

I had heard of Frosterley “marble”—a misleading name for what is actually a dark, durable limestone. It can be cut and polished like real marble, but unlike the genuine article, it is riddled with fossils, mainly solitary corals, which create peculiar patterns when sliced open. It has been used extensively in buildings of note, including Durham Cathedral.

So imagine my delight when we ...

Harehope Burn Lead Mine

What a thrill it is to stumble upon the unexpected. A bit of history, a scenic spot, or perhaps a fleeting moment with nature.

Weardale is unfamiliar to me, and my expectations were suitably low for the hills south of Wolsingham. So imagine my joy when we found the remains of Harehope Burn Lead Mine, tucked away in a pleasant little gill, complete with a ge ...

It was -5 degrees Celsius this time last week. Now it's +11 degrees. Needless to say all the snow is gone #weardale
Old quarry workings transformed by snow and ice into a starkly beautiful winter landscape at Low Bollihope, in the Co Durham Pennines of North East England. In the warmer months of summer, the area is perhaps better known as a popular picnic spot and route that connects Weardale and Teesdale.

Low Slitt Lead Mine, Weardale

This is what's left of the Low Slitt Lead Mine, once one of the biggest mines in the North Pennines. The mine had a long history, with lead ore extraction going on as early as two centuries before it really took off in the early 1700s, thanks to the efforts of the Sir William Blackett Lead Company. At its peak, over 100 men worked here, carving out a level in the hillside an ...

Went to Hexham via Allendale today and the fog lying in the dales gave some great scenic effects on the way there and on the way back.

Here is an arc of a fogbow from the road from Langdon Beck to St John's Chapel, with the sun roughly behind us.

Walkers are Welcome Towns - Wolsingham, County Durham

Wolsingham is the gateway of Weardale, one of County Durham’s rural country Dales. The area is north of the well know Yorkshire Dales, between Teesdale and Tynedale, but it is less well known and is largely undiscovered! Weardale is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Walkers are Welcome
Crossing the North Pennines on the road between Langdon Beck in Teesdale and St John's Chapel in Weardale. Love the bleakness of the landscape (I believe the marker poles are to assist the drivers of snow ploughs, clearing the route during Winter months).
