One reason in particular: shareholders are never satisfied with "This business keeps on doing good things that customers like and making a sustainable profit"
and keep on pushing for unreasonable "growth" at whatever cost, to whoever. If that means slashing product lines that customers are merely *satisfied* with, that's what it takes.

It works both ways.
Back in the days when I was responsible for library web catalogues the first chance I got I loaded libraries' authors of the month as potted searches. Within days a couple of libraries were on the receiving end of very nice emails from authors which made the staff involved feel somebody out there appreciated them.
