Waunceirch man sentenced for arson attacks in Neath Port Talbot

An 18-year-old man from Waunceirch, Neath Port Talbot has been jailed after admitting to multiple arson offences, including setting fire to his ex-partner’s clothing and deliberately starting a pub blaze.

Josh Smith, who was 17 at the time of the offences, set fire to clothing belonging to his former partner on 4 January, recording the act on his phone and later sharing it to Instagram.

Just two days later, he deliberately ignited a fire in the toilets of the Somerset Arms, Commercial Road, Taibach. Smith also attempted to set fire to a wheelie bin belonging to a relative of his ex-partner.

After pleading guilty to two counts of arson and one count of attempted arson, Smith was sentenced to 16 months in a Young Offenders Institution. He has also been made subject to a five-year restraining order against the victim.

PC John Ryan from South Wales Police said:
“Josh Smith committed these dangerous offences as retaliation following the end of his relationship with his ex-partner and made numerous people fearful for their safety as a result of his actions.

“We hope he takes the time he will spend at the Young Offenders Institution to think about his actions and to change his ways.”

Waunceirch man jailed for violent assault on ex-partner

A man from Waunceirch, Neath Port Talbot, has been jailed for a violent assault on his ex-partner, following a break-in at her home earlier this year.

28-year-old Cameron Gladwin forced entry into the woman’s property at around 7am in February, despite the pair having been separated for several months. Once inside, he carried out a sustained and violent attack, leaving the victim physically and emotionally shaken.

Gladwin initially pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but changed his plea to guilty in July. He has now been sentenced to 12 months in prison.

“No woman should have to fear the repercussions of ending a relationship with their ex-partner,” said Detective Constable Amy Davies. “We hope this is the end of the victim having to fear what Gladwin will do next.”

South Wales Police has urged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to seek support and report incidents. More information is available on their domestic abuse advice page.

Neath man charged over collapse of Ammanford school stabbing trial

45-year-old Christopher Elias appeared before Swansea Magistrates’ Court earlier today (Wednesday 14 May) charged with the offence of refusing to answer a question relating to the qualification to serve on a jury.

The trial over the stabbing and attempted murder of two teachers and a pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman by a 14-year-old collapsed in October last year, with the judge saying there had been a “great irregularity in the jury”.

A subsequent retrial saw the teenage girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sentenced to 15-years for the attack on teachers Fiona Elias, Liz Hopkin and a pupil during break time at the school in April 2024.

Elias was released on unconditional bail ahead of his next hearing on 2 June at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.
