President Joe Biden has commuted the sentence of Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, who was convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents and is serving life in prison. Peltier was denied parole as recently as July and wasn’t eligible for parole again until 2026. He was serving life in prison for the deaths of the agents during a standoff on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Biden says Peltier will transition to home confinement. The fight for Peltier’s freedom is entangled with the Indigenous rights movements. Nearly half a century later, Peltier’s name remains a rallying cry.

SEATTLE -- "Standing Rock Water Protector #AysenurEygi was honored tonight on the banks of Alki Beach in Seattle. Aysenur, 26, was a life long activist, an American with dual citizenship in Turkey, and a recent graduate of the University of Washington.
"Aysenur was among those who came to Standing Rock to defend the water from #DakotaAccess Pipeline [#DAPL]. Aysenur was 18 years old when she came to Standing Rock.
"'It was an intentional killing which can not be justified,' said Jonathan Pollak, who tried to resuscitate Aysenur as she bled to death.
"'It was quiet, there was nothing to justify the shot, the shot was taken to kill,' Pollak said

"A chaotic and heated scene played out here in the nation’s capital as a #NativeActivist advocated for tribal #sovereignty on the steps of the highest court in the land.
"Candi Brings Plenty (they/she), a Two Spirit #WaterProtector and land defender from the #OglalaSioux Tribe, opened an event marking the unprecedented loss of women’s reproductive rights with remarks in the #Lakota language. But several counter-protesters — all of them non-Native — repeatedly tried to disrupt the gathering that was held on the second anniversary of the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.
"Yet #BringsPlenty, who was a prominent figure in the movement against the #DakotaAccessPipeline, stood their ground. Holding an eagle feather fan and a sign in defense of tribal rights, they able to acknowledge the ancestral lands of the #Nacotchtank and the #Piscataway peoples who have lived in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas since time immemorial — even as one non-Native went so far as to try and block others from witnessing the Women’s Strike event."
