Lund said opponents of the Grassy Mountain and Blackstone projects worry they would affect the quality of drinking water from the Oldman and North Saskatchewan rivers due to their respective locations.

A peer-reviewed study published last year found contamination from old coal mines in Alberta had been polluting nearby bodies of water, negatively impacting water quality and aquatic ecosystems.

“It’s already in the sensitive area,” Lund said, referring specifically to the Grassy Mountain project. “There’s already been legacy mining up there decades ago, and there’s already an overwhelming amount of selenium in some of the lakes up there, so the economics of the thing don’t make sense and the conservation elements of it certainly don’t make sense.”

Gorgeous day to get out to the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, and to collect signatures for the #WaterNotCoal petition. People really come right over to sign once they realize what the petition is about.
I have Narcan, a petition to sign, and occasionally made folkx crack a smile.. so invite me over for tea. Bring friends. #WaterNotCoal waternotcoal.ca
It's been a fun couple of days, with a sew day yesterday, and then a Korean supper (Mandugook) with a friend. Last night was the final leadership forum for the National NDP party, and today was a voting party to bring out the actual vote. The forum was held in a heritage building, and the format was so much different from the debate format, which is ubiquitous in politics, allowing the candidates to build each other up, rather than tear each other down. Today's event was hosted by Alberta's best premier, Rachel Notley. I have enormous admiration for both her and Heather for taking on politics in a big way while still raising their kids.
Yesterday and today, I got 14 more signatures for the #WaterNotCoal petition. I'll be out collecting signatures for a couple of days next week, as well as at the various other events I'll attend. I need more signature sheets!
Thank you @bmcnews.bsky.social for running a story on the #CorbLundPetition #WaterNotCoal. After a good start, hopefully we get a bump up for these regular weekend afternoons at #EarthsRefilleryCoop. The #petition goal is 178,000 signatures.

Citizen Initiative Petition: No New Coal Mining in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains

The reasons for this new petition and where to sign in McCauley.

It's a nice weekend so far, although I seem to have some sort of allergies or cold bothering me. I used the tortilla press, the atta flour and the recipe I had to make methi roti for supper. They don't look or feel the same as the ones that are rolled out by hand, but they work for dipping into chili. I got my first signature on the #WaterNotCoal survey last night, and got a bunch more today at the Old Strahcona Farmers' Market. Whyte Avenue is pretty by night, and there are new murals to see in the daylight. Tonight is better than Christmas for me because I will wake up to #DaylightSavingTime. It's no longer fashionable to like time changes, but I find it fabulous to have longer evenings all through until November now! And then, we'll need that extra light in the mornings. Weather in #YEG is unseasonably lovely!

Come sign the #CorbLundPetition #WaterNotCoal on Saturday afternoons from 1-3, or Sundays 2-4 at #EarthsRefilleryCoop (10831 95 St #Edmonton). ID is required, showing your home's physical address, not the mailing address. #yeg #coal
