It was on this day in 1972 that Richard #Nixon sat in the Oval Office with H.R. #Haldeman, his Chief of Staff, and discussed something. What it was, we don't know, but we can guess that it was something rather explosive as it was erased from a tape made of the event, creating the now-infamous 18 1/2 minute gap.

I was reading an article from the Museum of Portable Sound which gave a history of that event, partly from a sound engineer's point of view, and thus was pleasantly surprised to find it making a political point which I had already mused upon, as #Watergate was, first of all, something that happened at the beginning of my awareness of what politics was, in a location that was basically local to me, and second, an event which contributed to subsequent and current #corruption at the highest levels of government. That point was hidden in a caption of a picture of the Nixon Library at the very end of the article, and it kind of says it all:

"The idyllic and glamorous Richard Nixon Presidential Library, dedicated to a man who, by accepting President Gerald Ford’s pardon, admitted to criminal wrongdoing in the Watergate scandal, thereby setting the precedent for US presidents to engage in criminal activity unpunished. Nixon’s pardon can be seen as directly responsible for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s lack of consequences for establishing the still-operational illegal prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and launching their criminally unjust invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003, which led to countless US war crimes including the torture of prisoners as well as the maiming and killing of Iraqi civilians. Nixon’s pardon can also be viewed as having paved the way for the war crimes of Barack Obama [ https://harvardpolitics.com/obama-war-criminal/ ], the innumerable illegal activities of Donald Trump during his presidency (including fomenting a treasonous coup attempt, the criminality of which is still being debated), and Joe Biden’s flagrant flouting of international law in his 'ironclad' enabling of (and cooperation with) Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians."

Barack Obama Is A War Criminal - Harvard Political Review

President Obama is not a pioneer of the illegal and offensive wars that the United States has engaged in during the last 20 years. But the use of drone strikes under his administration make him an international war criminal.

Harvard Political Review

June 17, 1972 - In the early morning five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. They had been hired by President Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) to install bugging devices and copy documents.

The abuse of power and obstruction of justice involved in the cover-up of this crime eventually led to the resignation of the President, at the time on the verge of impeachment by the House or Representatives.

  • Argumento y comentario:

When #Democrats were preparing to impeach #MafiaDon the first time around in late 2019, I wrote an Op/Ed noting that they needed to include EVERY crime he had committed those 3 years (and the list was long) rather than just his attempt to extort Zelensky.

People NEEDED to see the lengthy laundry list of crimes he had committed while in office.

They did just as expected, his criminal history dismissed, and here we are today.
